Brexit Takes Effect: Immediate Impacts for UK Citizens in Portugal
With Brexit now in force, UK nationals in Portugal face new realities regarding residence rights, travel, and access to services in the first days of the new regime.
As of January 1, 2021, the Brexit transition period has ended, fundamentally changing the status of UK citizens in Portugal.
Immediate Changes
For UK Residents in Portugal
UK nationals who established residence before December 31, 2020:
- Protected status: Rights preserved under Withdrawal Agreement
- Registration required: Must exchange EU documents for new biometric cards
- Continued benefits: Healthcare, work, and social rights maintained
For New Arrivals
UK citizens arriving after January 1, 2021:
- Third-country national status: No longer EU citizens
