Overview
Historical Reparation Program
The Portuguese Sephardic citizenship program recognizes the historical injustice of the expulsion of Jewish communities from Portugal in 1496-1497. While the program continues, significant changes in 2024 have altered the requirements for new applicants.
Origins of the Program
In 2013, Portugal created a special citizenship route for descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula in the 15th century, as a form of historical reparation.
2024 Law Changes
Organic Law 1/2024 introduced new requirements including 3 years of legal residence in Portugal and approval by a Ministry of Justice evaluation commission.
Current Status
The program remains open but with stricter requirements. Proposals to terminate the program are under parliamentary discussion.

Who Qualifies Under Current Law?
Sephardic Jewish Descent
You must be a descendant of Portuguese Sephardic Jews, documented through genealogical records, family traditions, or community certification.
Community Certification
Obtain a certificate from the Jewish Community of Lisbon (CIP) or Porto (CIL) confirming your Sephardic Portuguese ancestry.
Residency Requirement (New)
Since April 2024, you must have legally resided in Portugal for at least 3 years before applying.
Commission Approval (New)
Applications now require final approval from an evaluation commission appointed by the Ministry of Justice.
