What Americans Need to Know
Common questions from US citizens
🇺🇸 Will I lose my US citizenship?
No. The United States allows dual citizenship. Becoming Portuguese does not affect your US passport or citizenship status. You will have two passports and can travel on either.
💰 What about US taxes?
Citizenship alone doesn't create tax obligations. As a US citizen, you already file taxes on worldwide income regardless of additional citizenships. Portuguese citizenship only creates Portuguese tax obligations if you become a Portuguese tax resident (living 183+ days in Portugal). The US-Portugal tax treaty prevents double taxation.
📍 Do I need to live in Portugal?
Not for ancestry-based citizenship. If you qualify through parents or grandparents, you can apply entirely from the United States. You don't need to visit Portugal, learn Portuguese, or establish residency. For naturalization (5-year residency path), yes, you would need to live in Portugal.
🔐 Security clearances and government jobs?
Dual citizenship can affect certain security clearances or government positions. If this applies to you, we recommend consulting with your employer or legal counsel about your specific situation before proceeding.
