Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How far back can you search for Portuguese birth records?
We can search Portuguese birth records dating back approximately 200 years, covering both civil registry records (from 1911 onwards) and parish records (baptism records prior to 1911). Our team has access to archives across all districts of Portugal.
What information do I need to start a birth certificate search?
The more information you provide, the faster and more accurate the search. Ideally: the person's full name, approximate date of birth, and place of birth (city, town, or parish). If you have limited information, we can still conduct a broader search across multiple registries.
Can you obtain birth certificates for someone who has passed away?
Yes. We regularly obtain birth certificates for deceased individuals, which is essential for citizenship by descent applications, inheritance proceedings, and genealogical research.
Do I need to travel to Portugal to get a birth certificate?
No. Our legal team in Portugal handles the entire process on your behalf. We search the archives, request the certificates, and can send certified copies or apostilled originals directly to you anywhere in the world.
How long does it take to obtain a Portuguese birth certificate?
For records in the digital civil registry system (post-1911), certificates can typically be obtained within 1-2 weeks. For older records requiring parish archive searches, the process may take 2-6 weeks depending on the archive's location and record condition.
What is the difference between civil registry records and parish records?
Portugal's civil registry system began in 1911. Before that, births were recorded as baptisms by the Catholic Church in parish books. For births before 1911, we search parish archives. For births after 1911, we search the civil registry offices (Conservatórias do Registo Civil). Both have full legal validity.
Can you also obtain marriage and death certificates?
Yes. In addition to birth certificates, we can search for and obtain marriage certificates, death certificates, and other civil registry documents from Portuguese archives.
What if you cannot find the record?
If after an exhaustive search we cannot locate the record, we inform you of all the searches conducted and the archives consulted. We provide a detailed report that can be useful for alternative approaches or further genealogical research.
