Americans can still obtain the Portugal Golden Visa through 6 qualifying routes: Investment Funds (€500K), Scientific R&D (€400K), Cultural Heritage (€200K), Job Creation (10 jobs), Capital Transfer (€1.5M), or Company Formation (€500K + 5 jobs). Real estate investment was eliminated in October 2023.
How long does the Golden Visa process REALLY take?
Realistically, 6-9 months from application to approval. Be wary of firms promising "90-day approvals"—this is rarely achievable. The timeline includes: 1 week for assessment, 1 month for documents, 72 hours for submission, 6-12 months for AIMA approval, and 1-3 months for card issuance.
What about US taxes and FATCA compliance?
US citizens must comply with FATCA reporting and PFIC rules for Portuguese investment funds. We work with US-specialized tax advisors to ensure your Golden Visa investment is structured for optimal tax efficiency while maintaining full compliance with IRS requirements.
Do you receive commissions from investment funds?
No, never. Receiving commissions from investment funds is prohibited by law for Portuguese attorneys (Ordem dos Advogados). Our advice is 100% independent and unbiased. We work exclusively for you, not for fund managers.
Can I include my family in the Golden Visa?

Do I need to speak Portuguese?
No Portuguese language requirement for residency. You only need basic Portuguese (A2 level) if you apply for citizenship after 5 years. Language courses are widely available, and the test is straightforward.
What happens if my application is rejected?

Can I buy real estate with Golden Visa?
